A finish determines how shiny the surface looks, how easy it is to clean, how well it hides wall imperfections, and how long it lasts in Kolkata's humid climate. Many homeowners pick a finish based only on the swatch they see at the paint shop, only to regret the choice six months later when the walls look dull, marked, or patchy. This guide breaks down the four most common paint finishes and helps you decide which one belongs in which room.

The four main paint finishes

Paint manufacturers in India — Asian Paints, Berger, Birla Opus, and others — typically classify their emulsions into four finish categories: matte, satin (also called eggshell), semi-gloss, and high-gloss. The difference between them is the sheen level, measured as a percentage of light reflected off the surface at a 60-degree angle. Matte paints reflect almost no light (0–5% sheen), while high-gloss paints reflect 70% or more.

1. Matte finish

Matte is the flattest, most non-reflective finish. It absorbs light, which makes it excellent at hiding surface imperfections — small cracks, uneven putty work, or patchy plastering. In Kolkata homes, where many walls are decades old and have minor settling cracks, matte is often the safest choice for living rooms and bedrooms. The downside is that matte is harder to clean — scrubbing can leave shiny patches on the surface, and stains tend to set in quickly.

2. Satin / Eggshell finish

3. Semi-gloss finish

Semi-gloss paints reflect more light (35–50% sheen), creating a noticeably shiny surface. They are highly durable, easy to scrub, and resist moisture well — which makes them ideal for high-humidity areas. In Kolkata, where monsoon humidity can stay above 80% for months, semi-gloss is the recommended finish for kitchens and bathrooms. The downside is that semi-gloss highlights every wall imperfection, so surface preparation (putty, sanding, primer) needs to be perfect.

4. High-gloss finish
