Surface Preparation Checklist Before Painting
Many paint failures originate before the finish coat is applied. The preparation step should be matched to the substrate and existing condition.

Walls and ceilings
- Remove loose or failing material.
- Address dust, chalking, grease and contamination.
- Repair cracks and uneven areas where required.
- Use the primer/undercoat specified for the chosen system.
Metal
- Remove loose rust and contaminants.
- Prepare the surface according to the selected primer/enamel system.
- Do not assume an interior wall primer is suitable for metal.
Wood
- Identify whether the finish is enamel, PU, lacquer or another wood system.
- Prepare/sand according to the manufacturer's system.
- Use compatible sanding sealer/primer where specified.
Existing paint
Do not cover a failing substrate simply because a new paint has high advertised performance. First determine whether the old coating is sound, compatible and properly prepared.
