Why Primer is Non-Negotiable
Primer is the foundation of every good paint job, yet it is the step most homeowners try to skip to save money. This is a false economy that costs far more in the long run. Primer serves several critical functions: it seals porous surfaces, prevents alkali attack from new cement plaster, blocks old paint stains from bleeding through, improves paint adhesion, and reduces the number of topcoat layers needed. Without primer, even Rs. 1500/litre luxury paint will fail within months on new plaster, while with proper priming, even economy paint performs well for years. Types of Primers
Water-Based Wall Primer: The most common type for interior walls. Products like Asian Paints Decoprime and Berger Primer are applied before acrylic emulsion on plastered walls. They dry quickly (2-4 hours), have low odour, and can be thinned with water. Essential for new plaster to prevent alkali burn, and for repainting to seal the old surface and provide a uniform base.
Solvent-Based Primer: Also called oil-based or alkyd primer. Used on metal surfaces, wood, and over old oil-based paint. Provides superior adhesion and stain blocking. Has strong odour and longer drying time (6-8 hours). Not recommended for interior walls where water-based primer is sufficient.
Exterior Primer: Specifically formulated for exterior surfaces with added waterproofing and UV resistance. Essential before applying exterior paint on new plaster, bare concrete, or when switching from one paint type to another. Products like Asian Paints Exterior Primer seal the surface against rain and moisture while providing a stable base for the topcoat.
Metal Primer: Anti-corrosive primers for iron, steel, and galvanized surfaces. Red oxide primer is the traditional choice, but modern zinc-chromate and epoxy primers offer superior protection. Essential before applying enamel paint on gates, grills, railings, and structural steel. Without metal primer, rust will appear within months, causing paint to flake off completely.
Wood Primer: Seals wood grain, prevents tannin bleed, and provides a smooth base for wood finish. Required before applying PU, melamine, or enamel on new wood. Without wood primer, the finish may appear uneven and adhesion will be poor. See our Wood Finish Guide for details.
Waterproofing Primer: Products like Dr. Fixit Primeseal are designed for damp or wet surfaces where conventional primers fail. They penetrate deep into porous substrates to create a water-resistant barrier. Essential for bathrooms, basements, and exterior walls with moisture problems.
When to Use Primer
New plaster: Always. No exceptions. Wait 28 days for curing, then apply alkali-resistant primer. Repainting: Yes, always. Even if the old paint is in good condition, primer seals the surface and improves adhesion of the new paint. Changing paint type: Mandatory. Going from oil-based to water-based (or vice versa) requires primer to ensure compatibility. Bare surfaces: Always. Metal, wood, and concrete all require primer before any topcoat. Stained surfaces: Yes. Primer blocks old stains, water marks, and crayon marks from bleeding through the new paint.
Application Tips
Dilute primer as per manufacturer instructions — typically 10-20% with water for water-based primers. Apply one even coat using a roller for large areas and brush for edges. Ensure complete coverage with no thin spots. Allow full drying time before applying topcoat — rushing this step causes adhesion failure. Sand lightly after drying for an extra smooth finish on interior walls. For exterior surfaces, ensure no rain is expected for 24 hours after application.
